Parked in front of what I’d dubbed as the house of horrors, Dara shifted into park before perching her sunglasses on top of her head. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

The L-shaped house had a large, covered front porch with at least nine pillars that held up the porch’s roof, the paint on each of them chipping away. Bright red roof tiles contrasted with the off-white siding, which still needed a good pressure washing. The front door was the same red as the roof shingles. Nothing had changed since the last time we’d been forced to visit.

I stared at the house, having a hard time believing I’d lived there on purpose.

Ravenscroft Manor.

I knew the name and history because of the house’s reputation back in West Virginia. Restored in the 1980s by the local historical society, it was then bought by a horrific witch who siphoned not only powers but also the youth from her witch victims.

Oh yeah, that bad old witch was me. A real life horror story. And a house that was spelled to follow me wherever I go. My hands shook, and I balled them into fists.

I squared my shoulders. “I don’t think I have any other choice.”

“That bird is what they call a stage five clinger. The worst of the worst. Showing up at his door is going to cost you something.”

Dara had met Adger when she’d had her cat issue. Even though she couldn’t communicate with him, she’d been able to tell how much he unnerved me. She’d probably noticed him hanging around the diner too.

“I know. But we must remember we’re doing this for Lynnette.” I exited Dara’s car and walked up the steps to the creaky wooden porch.

Dara followed behind me so closely I could feel her warm breath on my back. The door opened before I could reach for the doorknob.

“Creepy,” Dara whispered.

“How is it staying so clean?” I expected a thick coat of dust and cobwebs, but every surface had a shine to it as if someone had cleaned it that morning.

“Magic, my love.” Adger twisted his head from side to side. Other than that movement, he looked like a stuffed animal on his perch in the drawing room. “How lovely you’ve come to me during your time of need.”

“I’m here for the grimoires you mentioned. Nothing more.”

“And you thought I’d just give them to you? This version of you?”

“I’m trying to be good.”

“That never worked out in your favor before.” He flapped his wings.

Dara flicked my upper arm. “What’s he saying? Remember, I don’t speak bird.”

“You guessed right. He wants something from me or he won’t tell me where they are.”

Dara pointed at Adger. “You listen here, bird brain. We can tear this house apart, one piece of rotting wood at a time.”

“This is who you associate with now? A mortal with cleavage bigger than her brains?”

I sucked in a sharp breath.

“He said something about me, didn’t he? What did he say?”

Dara stomped to the fireplace and picked up an iron poker.
